GLOBE 35th Anniversary at London Climate Action Week 2026

In 2026, GLOBE Legislators will celebrate 35 years of serving as the pre-eminent network of parliamentarians championing climate action and sustainable development. Formed in 1991 ahead of the landmark Rio Earth Summit (1992), the organisation provided the first-ever dedicated platform for parliamentarians to engage on climate change and sustainable development issues. Founded as GLOBE International, an international organisation registered in Belgium, by illustrious founding figures including Al Gore, John Kerry, Hemmo Muntingh, Akiko Domoto and others, GLOBE helped shape the Rio Conventions on climate change, biodiversity and desertification.

Over the course of the last 35 years, GLOBE’s parliamentary champions have led international efforts to create and shape the architecture of climate change legislation at national and regional levels. From hosting the annual legislators forums at the very first UNFCCC COPs, to now serving as the UNFCCC Focal Point for the Parliamentary Group, GLOBE has been central to the increasingly prominent engagement of parliamentarians in national and international climate action. As GLOBE coined at COP28 at the first-ever Parliamentary Pavilion, ‘Parliaments Make COPs Count’.

Rebranded as GLOBE Legislators in 2025, the organisation will mark its 35th Anniversary with a relocation of its headquarters to Nairobi, Kenya, in recognition of changing geopolitics and the increasing importance of the continent of Africa.

GLOBE will celebrate its 35th Anniversary at a special event at the UK Parliament on 24th June 2026, during the influential London Climate Action Week. Intended as the principle gathering of parliamentarians from around the world on climate change, the event will be one of several to foreground parliamentary engagement at LCAW. These include participation at other LCAW flagship events, from E3G’s State of Climate Politics Summit to GLOBE’s Student-MP Climate Surgeries engaging London’s 75 members of parliament.
