GLOBE delegation visits Mexican Congress
During an official visit to Mexico by Adam Matthews, GLOBE’s Secretary General, GLOBE International was honoured by the Mexican Congress for its work on climate change.
Invited onto the floor of the Congress Chamber during a packed session Mr. Matthews was welcomed by legislators from all parties.
The GLOBE delegation, including GLOBE Mexico President, Congresswoman Maria Isabel Mantilla Ortiz, met with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Congressman Francisco Agustin Arroyo Vieyra, to discuss the implementation of Mexico’s Climate Law and hosting of the 2nd World Summit of Legislators in Mexico City in 2014.
The honour in the Congress followed an earlier meeting with the President of the Senate of Mexico, Senator Ernesto Javier Cordero Arroyo, who presented GLOBE with a medal.
The President of the Senate strongly supported the implementation of Mexico’s General Law on Climate and the hosting of the second World Summit of Legislators (WSL) in the Mexican Congress in 2014.
The GLOBE delegation also met with the heads of all main parties in the Congress as well as the presidents of the Political Coordination Boards of both Chambers.
Commenting, Adam Matthews, GLOBE Secretary General, said:
‘Today was a great honour for GLOBE that reflected the hard work of GLOBE Mexico in supporting and advancing climate change legislation and amendments to the forestry laws.
It was clear from all my meetings with legislators from across the political spectrum that everyone is seriously committed to the implementation of Mexico’s new General Law on Climate.
If the last Congress was about passing a climate change law, this newly elected Congress is seriously focused on implementing it.’
