Following the launch of GLOBE DRC, the GLOBE International Secretariat and the CN-REDD organised a full day Forest Legislation Workshop on REDD+ on 19th September. One hundred and fifty participants attended the event and the audience was primarily formed by legislators.

Partnership launched between GLOBE and Indonesian Research Body on green economy

On Monday 3rd September a new partnership between GLOBE International and Perkumpulan Prakarsa formally began work on a programme to develop support in the Indonesian parliament for a transition to a low-carbon, green economy. Prakarsa is a Jakarta-based research organisation that works to advance positive social and environmental actions through independent, rigorous research and active stakeholder engagement (www.theprakarsa.org).

In order to commence this programme, Chris Stephens, GLOBE’s Director of Forestry and Ecosystems, visited Jakarta on 11th – 14th September to meet with the Prakarsa team, Indonesian legislators with an interest in the ‘green economy’ concept and a range of other stakeholders from civil society and the Government of Indonesia.

In a high level address to 300 legislators participating in the 1st GLOBE World Summit of Legislators, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres, recognised the critical importance of advancing national climate change legislation to create the political conditions for an agreement in 2015.

UN Welcomes landmark Rio+20 Legislator's Protocol

The Protocol was signed by the heads of the national delegations during a formal presentation to the United Nations Under Secretary General responsible for Rio+20, Sha Zukang. The Protocol sets out a number of commitments for parliaments designed to strengthen delivery of the original Rio agenda; progress within UN Conventions on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification; and commitments to emerge from Rio+20.
