Meeting with Senator Legarda and Director of Philippines Chapter held
Legislators from the Philippines Congress who are working to establish a GLOBE national chapter welcomed the official visit of European Union Commissioner for Climate Change Action, Connie Hedegaard.
GLOBE Philippines' inception coordinator, Mr Chris Estallo, underlined how Hedegaard's engagement with key legislators who are working to form GLOBE Philippines is recognition of the critical role of parliamentarians in climate action both in the domestic and international sphere.
Commissioner Hedegaard met with GLOBE Philippines founding members and welcomed the expansion of GLOBE in south-eastern Asia.
At the meeting Mr Estallo said: "given the EU and EU member-states' huge portfolio of climate and energy programs in the country, GLOBE Philippines, through its legislator members, is keen to explore further cooperation with the EU to work together toward an ambitious future climate regime by 2015."
GLOBE Philippines is set to have its inaugural meeting later in September and a formal launch event in October 2013.
To date, legislators who have expressed support to be part of Globe Philippines include Senators Loren Legarda, Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, Sony Trillanes and Gregorio Honasan; and Reps. Walden Bello and Ibarra Gutierrez of Akbayan party-list, Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro City, Agapito Guanlao of Butil Party-list, Sherwin Gatchalian of Vaenzuela City, Mel Sarmiento of Samar, Mark Leandro Mendoza of Batangas, Leni Robredo of Camarines Sur, Emmeline Aglipay of Diwa party-list and Susan Yap of Tarlac.
"The next two years will be critical to raise our collective ambition to urgently address the challenge of keeping the global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius. The 16th Congress is in the position to significantly shape a climate legacy for a better future", Estallo said.
More information on the formation of GLOBE in the Philippines will be made available on http://www.globe.org.ph later this month.
